July - Tofino fishing report

There’s something about a July morning in Tofino. The fog hangs low over Clayoquot Sound, the ocean is glassy, and before long the first rods are already bouncing. By the time most people are finishing breakfast, we’ve often got fresh salmon in the fish box and humpback whales surfacing in the distance.

July consistently delivers some of the most enjoyable fishing of the season, and it’s no surprise that many of our returning guests plan their annual trip around this month.

Chinook Salmon Are Taking Centre Stage

July is prime time for Chinook salmon around Tofino. Bait schools become more concentrated and mature salmon are actively feeding, giving us plenty of opportunities throughout the day. As the month progresses, more productive offshore areas begin to open up while the protected coastline continues to produce excellent fishing closer to home. 

Every season is a little different, but one thing stays the same: when the tide lines up and the bait is moving, things can happen fast.

Whether it’s your first salmon or your fiftieth, watching a Chinook peel line off the reel never gets old.

Halibut Fishing Continues to Produce

Halibut fishing remains one of the highlights of July. We’re fishing productive offshore structure where these powerful fish spend the summer feeding. Some days it’s steady action, other days you have to work for them, but July consistently gives anglers a great opportunity to bring home some outstanding table fare. Lingcod and rockfish often join the action as well, making for a mixed bag and plenty of excitement. 


And yes… there are still plenty of stories told on the ride home about the one that got away.

Wildlife Is Part of Every Trip

Fishing is only half the experience this time of year. July regularly brings humpback whales feeding offshore, sea otters floating through the kelp, curious sea lions following the boat, bald eagles overhead, and the occasional pod of dolphins. Even on slower fishing days, it’s hard to complain when nature puts on a show.
For families especially, these wildlife encounters often become just as memorable as the fish themselves.
